What our wāhine are saying
"There was no pressure to perform, only the invitation to show up fully as we were — which in itself was empowering."

“I grew up in the South Island and started diving when I was younger around Kaikōura and the Marlborough Sounds. When I moved up to Northland I decided to join the famous Kai Iwi Lakes SALT trip. Everyone was super supportive and lovely, and having arrived on the camp knowing nobody, I then met the best people who have now become good friends, and people that I've been able to share some epic diving experiences with. I continued on to do my instructors course and have loved introducing new people to freediving, sharing the hype, and allowing people to realise what they are capable of and the new experiences they can have. Super excited to be in the water with you all on the upcoming trip ❤️

“I had been on the introductory to free diving course with Salt previously where I’d learnt the basics, however the Salt camp allowed me to push my limits and gain way more confidence in the water. I was so impressed with coach Sams dedication and patience when helping me achieve my 10-meters. The feeling of trusting your body and being under water, at peace knowing your in safe hands was incredible. I came home on an absolute high. I met so many amazing girls and I am so excited to continue with my free diving journey and keep building on what I have learnt. I am super grateful for the community you have created.

“It was an absolute privilege to be part of Salt's freediving wānanga. From the moment we arrived, it was clear this space was more than a course — it was a healing space, a deeply spiritual experience shared among wāhine from all walks of life, backgrounds, and diving levels. There was no pressure to perform, only the invitation to show up fully as we were — which in itself was empowering. For many of us, including myself and close friends, we arrived with grief, life transitions, and deep emotional weight. Yet within this space, we found rongoā. The water became a mirror, a release, a grounding force. Salt held us in a way that honoured all aspects of our hauora — physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional.

“Just want to say a huuuge thank you Renee for this amazing opportunity that you have created for us. I have come away from this wānanga with a kete full of so much new mātauranga, both practical and beyond to the deeper connecting and belonging 🥰 love the korero around how we can balance all aspects of our whare tapawhā in this space and use it to reconnect with ourselves. I also made some valuable connections with like-minded wāhine, and the fire in me to learn and grow more in this space has been stoked even more 🔥 look forward to doing more training in the future and sharing my growth and experiences along the way in the hopes of inspiring and empowering more wāhine just like you have me. Ngā mihi aroha.
